Land Cruiser was first designed in 1951. However, the first model came out in 1954 under the tag Toyota Jeep. After that, Toyota Land Cruiser has undergone many transformations. Some of them include convertible, hardtop, station wagon and even pickup trucks.

A Toyota designer explained the origin of the Land Cruiser, Growing up after the war, I was really impressed by the US Army personnel's Jeeps... and how they could climb up and over obstacles. We have many classic shrines with stairs leading up to them, and these cars simply climbed up those steps. I decided that one day I would make a similar kind of 'mobile', something more like an animal or insect than a car, which could do even better.

Car Seat Toddler Tips On Making A Right Choice

Infant-toddler car seats are used for toddlers, 12-24 months old and up to 40 lbs. Did you know 98% of car seats are installed incorrectly. Make sure that your infant or toddler travels in safety.
Parents should know that car seats are the safest way for their child to travel.

Tips On Using And Choosing Car Seat For Toddler

Sitting position: Infant-toddlers should remain in a rear facing car seat until they reach 1 year of age AND 20 pounds. Till infant-toddlers reach both of these milestones, they are not developmentally ready to be placed in a forward facing car seat.

Car Seat restraints: It is suggested to go for toddler car seat with a five-point safety harness - one for each shoulder, one for each thigh, and one between the toddlers legs.

Belt adjustments: Car seats that require you to adjust the buckle from the back of the seat are best avoided. Go for the ones which allow you to make adjustments from the front and have raised belt slots for buckling ease.

Are the comfortable?: Ensure tha the toddler will enjoy a more comfortable ride. Buy a well-padded seat with plenty of head and back support. Also, make sure he can move his arms freely.

Washability: Buy car seats which are detachable and are machine-washable instead of seats with pad covers that can't be taken off! You know toddlers and messes go hand in hand.

Car seat movability: Ensure that the car seats does not move more than an inch in any direction. See your car seat's owners manual to determine what can be done about it, if they move more than that.

Time To Start Looking For A Maternity Swimsuit

Time To Start Looking For A Maternity SwimsuitSubmitted By: Amy Jarman

Swimsuit season is fast approaching and with Spring Break coming up many expecting moms may find themselves heading to some warm beaches for vacation destinations. Whether you are headed to sunny beach destination or just signing up for a water aerobics class, there is a good chance you will need a maternity swimsuit at some point in your pregnancy. There is also a good chance that you will not, and should not, try to fit into your pre-pregnancy swimsuit. Fortunately there are a lot of cute styles on the market to choose from in maternity swimwear. Here are a few ideas:

Halterkinis and Tankinis and are wonderful alternative to a solid one-piece or an all out bare all bikini (which most of us don?t have the guts to wear when expecting ? or otherwise!). The Halterkini and Tankini or some other word derivative with more or less the same meaning is a 2 piece suit with either an adjustable halter tie top or tank style straps and a belly skimming top. Bottoms are usually below the belly and sometimes have adjustable side ties ? which is good if your hips seem to be growing at the rate of your belly during your pregnancy! The Halter and Tankinis usually come in a wide variety of solids and patterns. Sometimes the bottoms are a solid with the top a pattern which gives a cute accent. Both of these styles of maternity swimwear allow you to be a bit flirtatious and stylish while not flashing a big pregnant belly to the world if that?s not your thing.

The Babydoll style is an even more modest yet fashionable style to choose from if you want full belly coverage and more bottom and hip coverage too. Prego Maternity Swimwear has both a Tank BabyDoll and Halter BabyDoll styles that come in a wide array of colors and patterns. Both of these styles provide maximum bust support and have high fitting bottoms that fully cover your belly and a dress style top that covers your bottom too without looking prudish.

If you are looking for flattering tummy coverage in a pool lounge maternity swimsuit, then the Strapless Mini is a good option. The mini comes in a variety of solids and patterns and often has a removable halter string for a little extra protection if you do decide to brave the waves or swim a few laps. The mini often gives more bottom coverage with the top and has separate bottoms.

If you do need a good solid one piece maternity swimsuit, The Prego Empire Tank gives amazing bust support and a real sports fit while still allowing plenty of belly stretch. If you are looking for a cute pattern in a one-piece, the Maternal America Halter Keyhole Swimsuit has come back this season in a super cute Turquoise pattern as well as in the bestselling black and brown solids. The Keyhole Swimsuit is an excellent hybrid of a fashion swimsuit with a flattering look which you can wear to swim.

Finally if you are brave enough and fit enough to wear a bikini when pregnant, you must invest in a maternity bikini because nothing else will fit completely right. Maternity bikinis have adjustable tie halters with a good amount of support and little extra room in the bust. The bottoms are stretchier than a non-pregnancy suit.

So whatever your maternity swimwear personality, there is a flattering style out there for you and probably in your choice of color or pattern. Most maternity swimsuits are made with plenty of spandex to take you through your entire pregnancy. Padded bras are usually preferable and add a little extra support for maternity swimwear, so check your online product descriptions or call the store if you are shopping online for your purchase. So, have fun in the sun and don?t wait until the last minute to find your perfect suit.

How to Get PSP Games Quickly And Easily..

Do you know the lastest PSP games nowadays? Or how cool would it be
to be able to play old Nintendo or Sega games on your PSP?

Just like the PlayStation 2, the PSP was designed to do more than play
games, though playing games is, of course, its main function. So how
does the PSP hold up in comparison to other handheld game consoles like
Nintendo's GBA and DS? And is it any good as an MP3 player or a portable
video player? PSP is the first truly integrated portable entertainment
system designed to provide consumers with a comprehensive entertainment
experience including music, movies, communication, and wireless networking.
PSP features graphics rendering capability comparable to that of the
PlayStation 2, allowing users to enjoy 3D games, with high-quality,
full-motion video, and high-fidelity stereo audio. The PSP also adopts a
newly developed proprietary, compact, but high-capacity optical disc,
Universal Media Disc (UMD), as its storage medium. Personally, I think
it's a great machine all around, and I use most of its functions on a
regular basis.

As its name suggests, the PSP -- or PlayStation Portable -- is a smaller,
lighter version of Sony's PlayStation. It's not as powerful as the PS2,
but more powerful than the original PlayStation, and it has a built-in
screen and speakers so you don't have to plug it in to anything to use it.

Unlike the PlayStation or PlayStation2, the PSP comes equipped with Wi-Fi,
so you can connect with other players wirelessly and, if your firmware is
version 2.00 or higher, get online to browse the internet.

But what about the games ?The good news is that there are around 30 games
out now, with more to come before Christmas

The highlights are Virtua Tennis World Tour and World Tour Soccer. The former
is a cracking tennis game that is highly addictive and has a real one more
go feel. WTS meanwhile, is a surprisingly decent footy game, that does the
decent thing and rates Southampton as better than Spurs.

Other games to watch include MediEvil Resurrection - a well-presented hack n'
slash - and the driving game Ridge Racer.

Sports fans are well catered for on launch but the real recommendation is the
cute Everybody's Golf.

If you fancy something different then try Fired Up - a vehicular combat title
set in a series of GTA style cities. Talking of GTA, Liberty City Stories is
due out in October and set to become massive. Puzzle games Lumines and Mercury
are worth a look too.

Children will enjoy Ape Academy, but overall the launch titles highlight the
older demographic Sony is looking for.

The high profile lineup includes a wide range of products that will appeal
to every type of gamer - from the sports fan to the action enthusiast -
providing consumers with the ultimate entertainment experience in the palm
of their hands.

How can I transfer the movies to my PSP?

Once you have downloaded any video format (a movie, a music clip,
a TV show, etc) the only thing you need to have
is a USB cable and you're set.

How much does it take to download a game? Is it a complicated
process?

Searching and downloading a game is not at all a complicated process,
even if you use a regular 56K internet connection. Obviously, using a broadband
connection will give you a much faster download experience.

Lighter Backpacking Gear

Backpacking is fun. But backpacking with a heavy backpack is NOT fun. This article will teach you how to have a lighter backpack so that you can enjoy your trip with lighter bags

Backpacking requires a person to walk long distances. This is the crux of this sport. However, it would be hard for a backpacker to enjoy this sport if he carries a heavy pack. You do not have to carry a heavy pack. By packing the right things, you can reduce the weight of your pack.

By packing items that has multiple use, you will definitely reduce the number of the items required to pack. In the end, you will also reduce the weight of your pack. This is great for someone who simply can not handle the weight or who is suffering from back problems due to the weight of their backpack.

It is actually quite easy to figure ways to get more than one use out of some typical gear. You can likely use many of the items you already carry and be able to eliminate the use of other items you carry. Additionally, there are other pieces of gear that have multiple uses, too. In fact, you probably already are using pieces of your gear in more than one way without even realizing it.

You may not be parachuting on your backpack trip but a parachute cord is a usefully piece of gear is lightweight and offers a few different uses. It can be used as a clothesline or to tie your food bag up when camping overnight. You can also use it in case of an emergency to tie a splint in place. To pack it you loosely wind it up and hook it to the outside of your pack.

You may have brought candles along just for a little extra lighting, but candles do more than provide light. A candle can be useful as it can assist in starting a fire as well as a waterproofing agent. They are lightweight and you will barely even notice if you add them to your pack. Plus they are much better than carrying a heavy lantern.

Duct tape is commonly know around the house as the ultimate 'do-it-all' tool. Duct tapes are durable and they are very strong in nature. A roll can last you a long time and it has many helpful uses. It can be used to insulate, as a wrap for a bandage and repairing tents, backpacks and almost everything else. Duct tape should always be a part of your backpacking gear.

Safety pins are another great item to pack as it is light and easy to pack. Safety pins can come in helpful to secure bandages, act as clothespins or hooks to hang items and as a stand in fish hook.

Plastic placemats are also lightweight and easy to pack. Plastic placemats can be utilized in many different ways. Instead of sitting on blankets and getting them wet, use a placemat. Use it to set your shoes on, so you do not get dirt and mud in your tent. Be creative and you can find other uses. For example, you can use a fly swatter to prepare food.

You may find that you can cut your gear down by several pieces by simply using multifunctional gear. You can also take out items that the multi-use gear is replacing. The key is to find items that are light and the item can be used in many situations. It takes some creative thinking, but you will be able to do it.

What Is Reiki? ...And How Can Energy Healing Help You? Part 2 of 3

Reiki is a natural healing system that millions around the world are using to balance energy, remove stagnant energy, and restore peace and harmony in the body, mind, and spirit.

Since the methods were rediscovered and renamed Reiki by Dr. Usui, people in nearly every country of the world are again using he laying-on-of-hands method for healing the physical body in one form or the other.

Many registered nurses, as well as massage therapists are finding that Reiki is the perfect compliment to their hands-on health practice.

Reiki Helps To Create A Balanced Environment

A balanced environment within one's being is important so that healing can take place. Healers who have been attuned to the Reiki healing flow find that their natural healing energies have been enhanced. They also describe their healing energies as being more powerful and directed than before. Many traditional health practitioners are adding Reiki to their credentials.

Reiki Is Transferred To Students By A Reiki Master/Teacher

The Reiki master passes the training through a series of attunements. During the attunement process, sacred healing symbols are sealed into your energy field, so that you can flow the higher vibrations of energy. The attunement process opens you up permanently to the Reiki energy so that you can give Reiki treatments to yourself and others.

When you are attuned you become an open channel (or pipe) for the Reiki energy to flow through to yourself and others. The energy gently and constantly circulates in your body filling your heart area first, and flows out from that point on through your hands. When you place your hands on an object, whether it is a person, a pet, your plants, your food, or a crystal, the healing Reiki energy flows into that object as well.

Reiki raises the vibrational frequency of the person receiving the treatment.

Sickness is low vibrational frequency.

Wellness, health and joy are higher vibrational frequencies.

Three Benefits In Learning Reiki:

1.You will not use your own energy to heal others. You will always use the Source energy. You'll be taught how to protect your own energy and not get drained when healing others.
2.You will not take on other peoples' problems as your own.
3.Reiki will not harm anyone. The Reiki energy is always a benefit to the recipient. The more practice you get, the more benefit there is. Just like any tool you use, it gets better and better with practice.

Reiki works well with all healing modalities traditional and alternative, such as: nursing, massage therapy, Acupressure, Acupuncturists, Bach Flower, Chakra Balancing, Chi Gong, Chi Kung, Chi Nei Tsang, Cosmic Energetic Healing, Laser Reiki, Crystal Work, Dowsers, Essential Oils, Falun Gong, Feng Shui, Flower Essences, Gemstone Therapy, Healing Touch, Body workers, Homeopathic Medicines, Hypnotherapy, Tai Chi, Vibrational Healers, Yoga, Hellerwork, and all Holistic activities.

These healers above are adding Reiki certification to their tool kit. Mothers, kindergarten teachers, and schoolteachers are also learning Reiki because it makes their jobs easier.

Backgammon Pip Counting Shortcuts

In backgammon, especially competitive backgammon like we see in online gaming parlors, pip counting is as much an integral part of the game as the dice. If you don't know where you stand in the race, you could well be left behind, as well as a whole lot poorer. Online games will often display the pip count, but relying on an automated count is dangerous. Pip counting is a skill you will need if you ever hope to play in the real world.

At the most basic level, pips are the spots on the dice, and the pip count is the total number of those pips you would need to roll to bear off your remaining checkers. If it will take you 120 and your opponent only 75, you might want to resign rather than accept that double offer...

Obviously counting all the checkers and all the points and coming up with your total, then repeating the process to see where your opponent stands would be tedious and likely take longer than your opponent will have patience for. This article will discuss two quick tips that should help speed the process greatly and help you on your way to mastering pip counting.

Opposite Points -

Opposites are among the easiest checkers to count, and since they're common in backgammon, a big time saver. The backgammon board is laid out with 24 triangular points, 12 points to a side opposite one another. Point 1 is opposite point 24, 2 opposite 23 on down to 12 being opposite 13. Visualizing those opposites, it's easy to see that two checkers positioned across from each other on opposite points, regardless of which pair of opposites they occupy will always total 25 pips. Count your opposites first and you should have a good start on your total count.

Blocks of Checkers -

Blocks are a bit trickier to explain, but once you get it, it will make perfect sense. First, consider a block of four checkers, two on the 1 point and two on the 2 point. Counting quickly, we see our pip count is 6. 6 is our base count for blocks of four. Now, let's say rather than the 1 point, our block of four starts on the 9 point. Simply count the open points (1 through 8) and multiply by the number of checkers in the block (8 x 4 = 32) and add to the base count of 6 for a total of 38.

This works with larger blocks as well. Ten checkers, arrayed two per point, starting at the 1 point will give you a base count of 30. Start that block on the 2 point and you have one open point multiplied by ten checkers and added to your base count of 30 for a total of 40. The base counts are: blocks of four = 6, Blocks of six = 12, blocks of eight = 20 and blocks of ten = 30. Blocks of consecutive points with two checkers apiece is a common occurrence in backgammon, so knowing the bases and formula can be a big help in counting pips.

There are many other great time savers when counting pips, but these two tips should be more than enough to get the beginning backgammon player off to a flying start.

Post Boom Real Estate Investing

The boom times of buying a single family home or condo and quickly flipping it for a profit has passed. In spite of warnings of housing bubbles and a real estate market waiting for disaster, investors this time last year were feverishly buying up real estate in Florida, Las Vegas, Arizona and other hot spots. One year later what has happened? Have these people gotten burned? Have they made Hugh profits? Well it all depends on the market. There is not just one real estate market in the US but many local markets. Yes market conditions have changed. The stories have also changed.

Investors who got in early indeed have made profits. Latecomers have not been as fortunate. Dreams of real estate riches for these people likely have not materialized. Why? Because of the timeframe people were looking to make money in and their finances. If flipping for profit was not a goal, many investors bought investor homes, planning to rent them out to cover the cost of the mortgage on the investment home. Well what if there are no renters? Then the investor must have the funds available to pay the mortgage while looking for a renter. As a last resort the investor could always sell the home. Suppose there are many investors in one area facing the same problem and they all try to sell their investment homes at the same time? Now the home values start to drop, homes sit on the market for a long time and overextended investors are facing a financial nightmare. This has happened in some areas of the country. This is how an overheated real estate market unravels. Are we seeing those kinds of markets now?

Not too many. One of the real estate markets that saw the greatest influx of investors was in the Phoenix area. When you get too many investors buying up homes, the local market becomes more volatile. As a result some zip codes in the Phoenix area are seeing a decline in prices and some are not. One thing in common is a slower appreciation of home prices. In the worst hit areas there are price declines.

Looking at the nationwide picture we see foreclosure rates rising in areas like southern California. In spite of the rising foreclosure rates, they are still well below historical highs. The situation bears watching, however at this point it is not ominous.

The main point for real estate investors is their timeframe and financial situation. We just had our boom. Making large profits in three years just isn?t going to happen. If investors are looking at holding properties for ten years of more they should be fine.

Investors need o lookout for real estate ?gurus? pushing investment homes and the prospect of managing and renting the properties for the investor. If you can?t afford to carry the mortgage for many months if renters cannot be found, don?t invest. Finding renters has to do with many factors. Areas with a large increase in job growth are most likely to support a strong rental market. Don?t believe real estate property pushers who give high rental rate figures based on recent years. The markets have changed and finding renters may not be as easy. Buying in areas that are flooded with other investors buying properties may also put you at risk. There is no single national real estate market, just local markets. Do your research before you invest.

Getting Started On the Right Foot

Although our personal financial outlook is one of the most important contributors to our individual and family well-being and happiness, most of us never learned this in school. Our school system doesn't teach you just how important your credit score, personal financial statements and financial goal-setting skills are, yet these things are crucial to your financial shape and success.

Continually work to improve your credit or establish credit by keeping accounts open and by paying your accounts on time. Don't worry if you have poor credit; you can still start investing in real estate right away. However, excellent credit will allow you to partake of some of the most creative and lucrative financing options available to real estate investors, so it is important to start working on your credit score.

Second, understand the importance of creating your personal financial statements. Your financial statements will help you create a plan that will lead you to true financial freedom.

Undoubtedly, some of you will cringe at the very thought of having to take a hard look at your financial state. Look at it this way: How will you ever be able to determine where you want to go and how you're going to get there if you don't even know where you are starting from? After all, the key to becoming financially free isn't earning millions of dollars; the key is controlling your personal finances. How many former pro athletes and rock stars have made millions of dollars only to find themselves bankrupt and living on skid row? How many multi-millionaires work long, hard hours just to pay the bills and then retire too old and worn out to enjoy the kind of lifestyle they had always dreamed of living? Too many. Unfortunately, they were never taught how to take control of their financial situation. Here is your opportunity to start doing that.

The first step towards living the lifestyle that you've always dreamed of is to determine how much passive income you need to become wealthy.

Next, assess your debt repayment expenses. There are positive and negative debt repayment expenses, and it is important that you understand the difference. Positive debt is when you use other people?s money to purchase an income-producing asset (leveraging). You will be acquiring a lot of positive debt through real estate investing. (For example, you take out a loan from the bank to purchase a new rental property that produces a positive cash flow. Although it is someone else?s money, like the banks, it still creates a positive revenue stream.) Positive debt expense is a positive cash flow that puts cash into your pocket. Negative debt expense is a negative cash flow that takes money out of your pocket.

Do what you can to reduce your negative debt. Analyze your assessed debt expenses and evaluate how you can reduce or eliminate the negative debt repayment expense. Often, when you reduce other budgeted expense categories, you are able to apply the difference between the assessed amount and the budgeted amount to your negative debt.

Finally, review all other expense categories and make appropriate adjustments.

SUCCESS STORY

Emily never believed she could start investing in real estate because of her poor credit. One day, she found out that her friend Debbie was making a lot of money investing in real estate despite her bad credit history. When Emily asked her how she was able to invest in real estate with a poor credit history, Debbie explained that she had learned how to buy properties despite her poor credit . She told Emily that at first she used seller financing and high-interest conventional and unconventional loans to finance her investments. Initially, her investments broke even due to the higher-than-normal interest rates. However, she applied the investing tricks and turned her credit around in 12 months. She then refinanced all of her properties at lower rates, which made her properties begin to cash flow $1,900 per month.

Weekend NFL Betting

The fifth week of the college football season doesn't have any must see games, but it does boast a number of crucial conference match-ups that should have the avid CFB pigskin fan pumped. By NFL BetBet and Ecobika NFL Betting

The first of which takes place at 12:30 ET when the Colorado Buffaloes invade Columbia to take on the undefeated Missouri Tigers. The Buffs put forth their best effort of the season in Athens, GA last week and almost upset the #10 ranked Bulldogs in the process. The Tigers have quietly ripped apart each and every one of their opponents on their way to their perfect 4-0 mark. The Buffs made a habit of beating Mizzou in to a bloody pulp during the Barnett era, so it'll be interesting to see how the new regime fares. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the Tigers won't be gracious hosts. You'll be able to see this Big 12 North battle on all FSN affiliates.

The next crucial conference match-up takes place in the MAC East where the Akron Zips pack their bags back up and hit the road once again to take on the surprising Kent State Golden Flashes. This will be QB Luke Getsy's Zips first conference game of the season, while the Golden Flashes already stand at 2-0 in the division. A win here by Kent would give them some fantastic breathing room the rest of the way, and they would have to be considered the odds on favorite to reach the MAC Championship game if they were to hold serve at home the rest of the way. Expect another solid MAC battle to occur, so tune into FOX Sports Cincinnati to see these two slug it out.

The 3:30 ET time slot is when most of the day's fun begins. Oregon takes on Arizona State, Georgia Tech invades Blacksburg to take on the Hokies, the Gators seek revenge in The Swamp over Alabama, and Texas Tech and Texas A & M will battle it out in what's become a very fierce rivalry over the years. You can catch the SEC battle on CBS, while all the other big games will be broadcasted on ABC.

Lincoln, Nebraska will be in a frenzied state come 7:00 ET as their Huskers take on the Kansas Jayhawks in what's certain to be a bloodbath. The Jayhawks snapped a 36-year losing streak to Nebraska last year in Lawrence, and dished out a woodshed beating in the process. Tune into Fox Sport Net to see if HC Bill Callahan decides to return the favor.

A couple of Big 10 powerhouses take the field at 8:00 ET as the Michigan Wolverines visit the Twin Cities to take on the Minnesota Gophers, and the #1 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes invade Kinnick Stadium to lock horns with the 13th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. One game looks to be a blowout, while the other should be very competitive. Can you guess which is which? Be sure to tune into ABC and ESPN to find out!!!

Betting NFL Week 4 Click Here there are a couple of decent games in the NFL, but the rotation for the most part doesn't really get my blood pumping. Many will be interested to see if the Ravens are for real, and to see how QB Phillip Rivers handles his first true road test as a pro. The TO saga really turned the Dallas camp upside down this week, so it will be interesting to see how they perform at Tennessee. Are the Saints for real, or was their fantastic exhibition on Monday Night just a smoke screen? Tune in at 1:00 ET to find out as they take on a desperate Carolina squad. Mike Martz returns to St. Louis now as the Lions offensive coordinator. Yeah, Not interested!!!

The afternoon slate does peak my interest a bit with New England and Cincy squaring off as well as Jacksonville and the Redskins. Cincy picked up an enormous win at Pittsburgh last week, and might come out a bit flat. NE was embarrassed on Sunday Night in front of the entire world, and should come out with their hair on fire. Jacksonville not only lost to Indy once gain, but they cried about it after saying the Colts were cheating and threw too many cheap shots. Are they really ready to go into Washington and take on a skins club that finally found its offense last week? Tune in at 4:14 ET on CBS or FOX to get answers to all these questions.

Acne Facts Myths and Treatment

People of all races suffer from acne, In the US 85% of everyone aged between 12-24 develop some form of acne, that amounts to 17 million people making it the most common form of skin disease.

In the UK 80% of 11-30 year olds will suffer from acne at some point.

Acne symptoms tend to disappear for the majority of people when they reach their 30's, however people can still suffer from acne well into their 40's & 50's.

Acne is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones on the skins oil glands, known as sebaceous glands, which leads to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions more commonly known as pimples or zits. They tend to appear on the face, neck, back, chest & shoulders.

Doctors believe that acne results from several related factors rather than one single cause. One of the most important factors is an increase in hormones called androgens, a male sex hormone. These increase in both boys & girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge making more sebum.

Hormonal changes related to pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne.

Heredity or genetics is another factor and researchers believe that acne can be inherited from parents. Studies have shown that many school age boys with acne have a family history of the disorder.

Certain drugs containing androgens or lithium can cause acne. A side effect of steroids can be acne.

Greasy cosmetics can alter the cells of the skin follicles and make them stick together causing plugs which can lead to acne.

Factors which can also cause acne are:

1. Friction caused by leaning on or rubbing the skin.
2. Squeezing or picking at blemishes.
3. Hard scrubbing of the skin.
4. Environmental irritants such as pollution & high humidity.
5. Changing hormonal levels in adolescent girls & adult women 2-7 days before their menstrual period starts.
6. Pressure from bike helmets, backpacks or tight collars.

Myths about causes of acne include.

1. Greasy foods & chocolate are often blamed for acne, but what we eat seems to have little effect.
2. Acne is cause by dirty skin is another common myth however blackheads & other acne lesions are not caused by dirt.
3. Stress is often blamed but has no effect in regards to the condition.

Acne treatment

There are 2 ways to treat acne, topical (applied to the skin) or systematic (taken by mouth). Both over the counter (OTC) meaning no prescription is necessary & prescription remedies are available. The goals of treatment are to heal existing lesions, to prevent new lesions forming, stop scarring & minimise psychological stress & embarrassment caused by the disease. Drug treatment is aimed at reducing several problems that play a part in causing acne: abnormal clumping of the cells in the follicles, increased oil production, bacteria & inflammation.

Depending upon the extent of a persons acne it is recommended to try one of several OTC medicines that are topical (applied to the skin) or systematic (taken by mouth) or a combination of both. For prescription remedies you must see your doctor.

Prescription topical medicines can result in side effects, the skin may look worse for a while before hopefully improving. Other side effects include stinging, burning, redness, peeling, scaling or discoloration of the skin.

Similarly some prescription oral medicines can have side effects such as increased tendency to sunburn, upset stomach, dizziness or light-headedness & changes in skin colour. Also some drugs decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills making it necessary to use a backup birth control method.

Baby Gift Baskets for New Parents

Baby gift baskets are the most precious gift you can give to your baby.

There's no more joyful an event than the arrival of a new baby, but it can sometimes be tricky to find a unique gift to give to both the little one and their mother. There comes a time when many couples make the decision to create new life. This is without a doubt the most wonderful experience any human being can have. There's nothing quite like having a child of your very own. Well, new parents need all sorts of baby supplies such as infant dishes, baby blankets, bottles, infant toys, cribs, basinets, mobiles, car seats and gentle cleansers. These are all products you can acquire in baby gift baskets. So, the next time one of your friends or family members has a child, consider one of the countless baby gift baskets, which are literally available all over the place.

Luckily gift baskets have been designed with this vexing problem in mind. Instead of struggling to find something suitable for the new baby, why not buy a luxurious gift basket that is packed with treats for both mother and baby? If you're new to the world of infants and toddlers, you should be aware that fine baby gift baskets can be purchased all over the place. A few local amenities you may have at your disposal are department stores and specialty baby gift shops. Department stores like Hecht's, Nordstrom's, Macy's, Belk's, Riches and Nieman Marcus carry all sorts of cool baby gift baskets, which are loaded with soft little blankets, baby toys, gentle body washes and extra soft towels. However, you don't have to resort to departments stores in order to find great baby supplies and accessories. Be sure you think about the Internet as well. Online you'll no doubt discover the grandest variety of baby gift baskets to suit anyone's needs.

Bear in mind that don't think too much when you purchase baby gift baskets as presents for your family member, child or acquaintance who's having a child. In reality all you need to know is the baby's gender. If you know this, you can find all sorts of cool baby gift baskets that would make any parent happy. On a final note, keep in mind that babies always need more toys, blankets, books, bath accessories and diapers. Therefore you can hardly go wrong with any of these baby products. It's easy to find soft toys and new clothes to buy the baby, but quite often the mother gets overlooked. So just imagine how gratefully your thoughtful gift will be received, fully laden with delights to be enjoyed not just now, but in months to come as well.

Now there are a lot of people who will be diligently looking around to find the perfect baby gifts to give to a new mother-to-be or to take to her baby shower. You may even be one of these people. With this in mind, you should know that there are a lot of great things that you could purchase for this new mother. She would definitely love to receive any of the items for new baby.

Likewise, you can create a? special security blanket. Whether it is a crocheted baby blanket or a knitted quilts, it is something we treasure because it brings us comfort. You see, although both of us have an artistic side,we are brothers and we have to make fun of each other. Nonetheless, when I had the baby blanket crocheted, I knew that he would treasure it and that his child would treasure it it even more. Usually, most of us get them when we are infants and keep them a little bit too long..

Well, before I found the most simple design crocheted baby blankets that I could. Most people says that, crocheting is easy, but I have never tried anything that I found more personally challenging. It was hard to keep focused, stitch after stitch. It was hard to count the stitches without losing track. It was hard to get all the loops even, and it was hard to see the project through from beginning to end. The first attempts at making crocheted baby blankets failed, and I was almost ready to give up when I finally started to make some progress.
I almost give all my attention to the crocheted baby blankets, turning off the TV and music and focusing intently on the work. My wife told me that this was a mistake. When she crocheted baby blankets, she liked to have the TV on, or at least have some friends over. Although it seems counterintuitive to me, she explained the reason it works better.?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
????????????????????????????????????????????
As you can see, crocheting is all about finding a natural rhythm. If you pay too much attention to getting everything exactly perfect with crocheted baby blankets, you will lose it all. If you can crochet a baby blanket without even thinking about it, however, you can keep the stitches smooth and even. I am glad that I listened to her advice and did not give up. It turns out that it is much easier to make a crocheted baby blanket when you do not pay too much attention to what you're doing.

All of these ideas are very exciting and will be greatly enjoyed by the person that you are giving the gift to. Hopefully, now you will no longer be stuck on what to purchase and instead may feel like you have too many choices. This can be a great feeling as you can then pass on some ideas to your friends who are stuck for ideas like you once were.

David Hicks: Why has he not yet been bought to trial in Australia?

David Hicks: Why has he not yet been bought to trial in Australia?

Habeas Corpus: Law a prerogative writ directed to someone who detains another in custody, commanding them to produce the other person before the court. It is mainly used to test the legality of an imprisonment. Macquarie Dictionary

David Hicks is charged with conspiracy, attempted murder and aiding the enemy. But the charges are significant for what they do not spell out. Though they are extremely serious, there is no allegation that Hicks killed or specifically harmed anyone.

His captors insist that he trained in al-Qaeda camps, guarded a Taliban tank at Kandahar airport and travelled to Konduz in northern Afghanistan to join Taliban engaged in combat against US-led forces. They say he intended to kill coalition combatants in Afghanistan between September and December 2001. They insist he aided al-Qaeda and the Taliban in the context of armed conflict. There are, however, some puzzling aspects, such as the claim that Hicks translated al-Qaeda training material into English from Arabic, a language of which he is believed to have had only a limited command.

The legal limbo in which Hicks and other detainees are held means they have been unable to invoke the writ of habeas corpus. They are held on Cuban soil, leading to the technical legal argument that this exempts them from the protection of the US constitution and the normal legal protections to which a prisoner is entitled. They have been held as enemy combatants, not prisoners of war, and so have been denied the protections of the Geneva Convention. Yet the charges against Hicks relate to warlike conduct.

Through the willing surrender of two of its citizens to this process, the Australian Government has set a dangerous precedent that should alarm all Australians. The military commission that will hear the case against Hicks is an extension of the US executive, not an independent tribunal. It is answerable ultimately to a US President who has called those in Guantanamo evil people.

This is second-class justice. Even alleged terrorists are due their day in court. Nothing in these latest developments overtakes belief that the fate of Hicks should be decided under Australian law or before a properly constituted international tribunal, not by the US military.

[Major Michael Mori - Military Lawyer for David Hicks claims the five year delay, so far, in bringing David to trial is due to the fact that he did not violate any international law so the US had to make up charges and an unfair system that would rubber stamp the charges without question. Had the US used a real court system like the courts-martial, we could have had a trial within the first year. But of course, David would have been acquitted which would not have served the political agendas in the US and Australia.
All David has wanted is a fair trial and Australia did nothing to obtain that for him since a fair trial would have proven David's innocence.

David's father Terry said the United States government was keeping his son in detention at the Cuban naval base as a scapegoat following the release of other western prisoners, including fellow Australian Mamdouh Habib.

Mr Hicks said David was the only westerner left among 540 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

I think David's the token white fella, he told the Australian Associated Press [AAP.

They're going to try and make an example out of him, particularly to the western world, that this is what happens if you play with fire.

David Hicks was granted British citizenship in December 2005 but his five-year battle for freedom again fell into limbo when the British government appealed the High Court ruling.

The US and the British governments have an agreement that British detainees will not face the US military commission.

But unlike the nine other Britons who have been released from Guantanamo Bay, Hicks has been charged - with conspiracy to commit war crimes, attempted murder and aiding and abetting the enemy.

November 8, 2006: Irish rockers U2 used the opening concert of their Australian tour to campaign for terrorist suspect David Hicks to be released from Guantanamo Bay.
The super group's front man, Bono, raised the Hicks case during a concert at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre in Brisbane. Bono, said Hicks should be released from the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba, where he has been since 2001. We call for David Hicks to be brought back to Australia, he said.

Although Australian Attorney General Philip Ruddock announced in August that the government would push for Hicks' return to Australia, Canberra has not made any such statements since that time.

In September, Ruddock said he had demanded the trial be dealt with as quickly as possible. We want to see it resolved as soon as possible, but we have to be realistic, he was quoted as saying in the September 29 Sydney Morning Herald.

This sounds good, but the truth is that neither Ruddock nor John Howard have pressed Washington to release Hicks, as the Blair government did for the Britons incarcerated in Guantanamo.

Australians are outraged at Hicks being denied justice and a News poll taken over September 1-3 found that more than 55% believe Hicks will not receive a fair trial under US jurisdiction.

John Howard, Phillip Ruddock and foreign minister Alexander Downer's acquiescence to the new US military commission law means that they are also in favour of denying habeas corpus, and possibly not just for Hicks.

A message sent from Australia's Washington embassy to Mr Howard's office in July 2005 outlines the findings of the US Navy investigation. The message, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, said an extraordinary effort was made by the US Navy to investigate allegations of abuse.

It concluded: The Australian Government's regular visits to Mr Hicks have enabled us to assess firsthand [the US Department of Defence's treatment of Australian detainees at Guantanamo Bay.
The Department of Defence treats all detainees humanely. They are provided food, religious materials, shelter, medical care, mail service, reading materials and clothing.

Despite the Australian Government's acceptance of US Navy investigation, allegations of abuse against Mr Hicks and other detainees continue to be made.

He's pretty down. He's not well and it's very hard talking to him, Terry Hicks said.

Explaining to him about the British citizenship, he's now at that point where he doesn't really care.

David had been sexually and physically tortured and had endured 18 months' solitary confinement during his incarceration, I think that would bring anybody to their knees, his father said.

Terry Hicks slammed the Australian government for its lack of support, particularly after its involvement in the cases of drug traffickers Schapelle Corby and Van Tuong Nguyen.

Terry says here will be an appeal against US legislation that provides a new framework for military trials. The new legislation also allows tough interrogation and the indefinite detention of terrorism suspects.

It was recently signed into law by US President George W Bush.

Terry Hicks says there is not much change to the last model for US military trials, which was ruled invalid by the US Supreme Court.
David's defence team will ... appeal against this, it'll have to go through the Federal Court of America to start with, then it'll work its way through the Supreme Court.

That could take upwards of two years, so David will be stuck there for another two years. he claims.

Claims of abuse emerged, with an affidavit from a US marine who said guards bragged about routinely beating inmates.
The marine told of one guard who bragged about slamming the head of a detainee into a cell door. His statement said other guards spoke of hitting detainees and denying them water.

Former US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld: 'Detaining enemy combatants provides us with intelligence that can help us prevent future acts of terrorism. It can save lives and, indeed, I am convinced it can speed victory.' Rumsfeld approved a range of measures for use against reluctant prisoners, including solitary confinement - which could be administered in repeated, back-to-back doses of 30 days - chaining people for hours in chilled or heated interrogation rooms, and what he euphemistically called 'sleep adjustment' - in other words, deprivation.

Vincent Cassard, head of the Red Cross inspection team, said the relentless interrogations were having serious consequences for the detainees' mental health.

The International Committee of the Red Cross [ICRC feels that interrogators have too much control over the basic needs of detainees that the interrogators attempt to control the detainees through use of isolation. The interrogators have total control of the level of isolation in which the detainees were kept; the level of comfort items detainees can receive; also the access for basic needs.

Cassard gave the example of interrogators' deciding that unco-operative detainees would not be allowed books. Again Cassard told him that the Red Cross team had heard so many prisoners say that books and other 'comfort items' were confiscated for refusing to talk that they believed this must be true. Miller replied that 'he would listen to the allegations, but he had given the ICRC the accurate facts'.

Major-General Geoffrey Miller made no secret of his belief that subjecting the unco-operative to harsher conditions had boosted the yield of intelligence. 'We are developing information of enormous value to the nation, enormously valuable intelligence,' he said with passion. 'We have an enormously thorough process that has very high resolution and clarity. I think of Guant?namo as the interrogation battle lab in the war against terror.'

Shafiq Rasul, one of the Tipton Three from Staffordshire, who was freed in March 2004, described the effect of Miller's system, which after three months' in solitary led him to make a false confession of attending a 9/11 planning meeting with Osama bin Laden and the fanatical Mohamed Atta in Afghanistan in January 2000. He was told the meeting had been videotaped.

Rasul claims,' the walls [of the interrogation room were rusty, and they seemed to be soundproofed. There was no ventilation; it was hot in there. One interrogator told me that anyone who was in Afghanistan was guilty of the murders of 9/11 - even the women and children killed by the American bombing.

'But they said my position was much worse, because the meeting in this video was to plan 9/11, and loads of people had told them that this guy in a beard standing behind bin Laden was me. I told them that in 2000 I didn't leave the country that I was working at the Wednesbury branch of Currys, who would have my employment records. They told me I could have falsified those records - that I could have had someone working with me at Currys who could have altered the data the company held, and travelled on a false passport.'

Finally, as his isolation continued and the interrogators deployed their full range of techniques, Rasul said, he cracked. In a final session, a senior official had come down from Washington: 'My heart is beating, beating, I'm saying it's not me, it's not me, but I'm thinking: I'm going to be screwed, I'm on an island in the middle of nowhere, there's nothing I can do.
This woman had come down and she plays me the video. I say: Are you blind? That doesn't look anything like me. But it makes no difference. I'd got to the point where I just couldn't take any more. Do what you have to do, I told them. I'd been sitting there for three months in isolation, so I say, Yes, it's me. Go ahead and put me on trial.

The time has come for the Australian public to stand up and demand that their government return David Hicks home to face his so-called wrong doings here in Australia. With the ever growing threat of a terrorist attack here in Australia, it would seem good practice for our court system to trial Hicks for possible terror allegations.

Keeping Baby Safe Your Most Important Role As A Parent

Saying Thanks, But No Thanks to Used Safety Equipment

Once your beautiful bundle of joy arrives, the work of raising your child really begins. The biggest job you have as a parent is keeping your baby safe. Yet, it is impossible to watch over your children twenty-four hours a day.

Thankfully, there are many safety products available to keep them from getting hurt. These products include safety gates, outlet covers, oven and table bumpers, doorknob covers, bed rails, locks and guards, and many more. As a parent, you need to use products that are one step ahead of their children's abilities, and can do so by getting down on their level and looking around. This gives you a child's eye perspective of child safety issues in your home.

But with so many products to buy and so many different brand names, how do you decide what products you need most? The best thing to do when it comes to safety is buy new products rather than used ones. An older, used product may have been recalled due to dangerous safety issues, or it may be damaged from previous use. Although hand-me-downs are great for clothes and toys, your childs safety is just too important to leave to chance. Babies R Us is a great place to find all the safety products you need.

That still leaves the issue of how to choose between one safety gate, for instance, and another. Here are some purchasing tips for some of the more popular safety items you will need for your baby.

Car Seats

More children are seriously injured and killed in auto accidents than in any other type of accident. Each year, hundreds of lives could be saved if children were protected in cars by using child safety seats. Using a child safety seat is the best protection you can give your child when traveling by car.

When purchasing a car seat, look for:

* Label states that it meets or exceeds the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards;
* Is the car seat appropriate for your child's height and weight?
* Be aware of the type of seat belts your car has; all car seats are not compatible with all seat belts;
* Check recent car seat recalls before making a purchase;
* Be sure that the seat you choose fits your child - a smaller baby can slip out of a seat that's too large. Infants one year or younger and up to 20 pounds must be placed in a rear-facing seat, toddlers (older than 1 year and between 20 and 40 pounds) may use a forward-facing seat, and children who are between 40 and 80 pounds need to be placed in a booster seat;
* Consider choosing a seat that is upholstered in fabric - it may be more comfortable for your child.

Safety Gates

Baby safety gates are an essential element in making your home baby proof. Now that he's on the move, every nook and cranny is a potential area of exploration for him. Your baby is curious about his new environment, wanting to investigate each little corner and new room. The best way to make sure he can't do any harm to himself is to install safety gates. These will prevent him from reaching the stairs, kitchen, or an office room, where there might be many wires and electrical equipment just at his height

Accordion gates, which open to form diamond-shaped patterns with wide V's at the top, can trap a baby's head and have resulted in strangulation deaths. In January 1985, gate manufacturers halted production of these gates, but there are still an estimated 15 million gates in use. Mesh gates also can be dangerous because a toddler's fingers can become trapped.

When purchasing a safety gate, look for the following:

* A hardware-mounted gate that attaches to the doorframe without any openings to trap fingers or necks. Pressure-mounted gates should not be used between rooms of different levels or at the top of stairs; children can dislodge them and take a tumble.
* Gates that swing out should never be used at the top of stairways;
* Nonflexible vertical slats or rods should be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart;
* Check for sharp edges and protrusions that could hurt a toddler's hands;
* Avoid gates with structures that could give a child a foothold for climbing. Keep large toys away from the gate to prevent a child from using them to climb over;
* The gate should be no less than 3/4 of the child's height

Playpens

These high-sided, enclosed play areas are popular because they allow parents to put their baby down with the knowledge that he can't wander off. It is great when you have to answer the phone, do a bit of ironing, or just catch a quick breath!

When purchasing a playpen, look for the following:

* Holes in the mesh should be no larger than 1/4 inch to keep small fingers from getting caught;
* The sides should be at least 20 inches high, measured from the floor of the playpen;
* Look for padding on the tops of the rails to protect your baby from bumps;
* The locks that allow you to lower a side should be out of your baby's reach.

Baby Monitors

The idea behind a baby monitor is that you can have the ability to move around the house or your yard and still be able to keep tabs on your baby by listening or now viewing your baby. This can help alert you to a crying baby, a baby who needs your help or just help you watch baby while he or she sleeps.

The baby/nursery monitor that you buy will have different levels of mobility. The base usually plugs into the wall, usually the nursery or wherever your baby is sleeping. The receiver can plug in or be mobile. If you intend to use the monitor as you move from room to room, you will want to invest in the mobile kind, versus the stationary variety.

When purchasing a baby monitor, look for the following:

* There should be at least two channels to choose from;
* Be sure that you have a low battery indicator light. Without this you might be listening to the receiver, thinking all is quiet in the baby's room, when in fact all you've got is a dead battery;
* Has a power-on light so that you can know the unit is on without disturbing the baby;
* Has a volume control to put you in charge of how loudly you wish to hear your baby;
* Are you planning to carry around your end of the monitoring system? Then you might want a belt clip!

Bath Seats

A bath seat gives your child added support while in the bathtub and can help prevent a soapy baby from slipping out of your hands and hitting her head on the tub. Keep in mind, however, that you should NEVER leave your child unattended in the tub!

When purchasing a bath seat, look for the following:

* Never use a bath seat on textured or non-skid surfaces unless the manufacturers instructions specifically state the seat is intended for such surfaces;
* Look for the JPMA Certification Seal.

Always remember, no matter what safety product you are buying, to look at the features to be sure they meet your specific requirements. Also check to be sure that the product you are considering has not recently been recalled. The safety of your child is of utmost importance dont leave it to chance!

The Number One Killer of Children Under the Age of 15 is Almost Always Preventable

(ARA) - Before you hit the open road, there are a few things you need to take care of. You need to make sure your engine is running smoothly, your tires are properly inflated, and if youll be traveling with children, you have the equipment to keep them properly restrained.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, traffic crashes are the number one killer of young children. In 2002, 2,542 children ages 15 and younger died in car crashes; another 294,000 were injured. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics show nearly half of the deaths and injuries occurred because the children were not properly restrained.

One of the biggest problems were seeing is that parents graduate their children from car seats to seatbelts when they should really be in booster seats, says Elly Martin, who is a spokesperson for the NHTSA. Weve also seen a number of cases where children who are in car seats are not very well secured.

Every state requires that infants and children ride buckled up. However, state laws do not always require the safest way to transport a child. So what is the safest way? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants always ride in the back seat -- in car seats that can only be used rear-facing until they are at least a year old and 20 pounds.

One of the biggest mistakes weve seen parents make is switching their child to a forward facing car seat too soon. Just because your baby has turned a year old or is over 20 pounds doesnt mean theyre ready. They must achieve both milestones before the switch is made, says Jeff Beyer, senior vice president and chief communications officer of Farmers Insurance.

There are a number of car seats on the market that are considered safe for babies at the in-between stage. So-called convertible car seats can be used as rear facing until the child is up to 35 pounds, or forward facing until they are around 40 pounds. They typically come with three different types of restraints: 5-point harness, T-shield, and overhead shield.

When your child reaches the top weight or height allowed for his or her car seat, that doesnt mean its time for them to switch over to a regular seatbelt. At 3 or 4 years of age, most children are still too short to be safely secured by a seatbelt. If they are not at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, they need the added protection of a booster seat, says Beyer.

* Making Sure Seats are Safely Secured

Pediatricians have done a good job spreading the word about the Academys recommendations, and the statistics show parents are listening. The number of fatal accidents involving children dropped from 2,603 in 2001 to 2,542 in 2002.

We are very heartened by improvements in child safety seat use by Americans; however, there is still room for improvement if every child is to travel safely on our roadways, says Martin.

Despite their best intentions, parents dont always install the seats properly, says Beyer. In the New Parents section of its Web site, Farmers Insurance has numerous tips regarding the proper installation of car seats.

Infant Seats

* Must be used in a rear facing position until child is at least 12 months old and weighs at least 20 pounds

* Never place this type of seat in front of an airbag. The preferred location is in the back seat in the middle of the car.

* Never hold your baby in your lap when the vehicle is in motion.

* Your childs head should be at least 1 inch below the top of the child seat.

* Rear facing infant seats reduce the risk of fatal injury in a car crash by 71 percent.

Toddler Seats

* Should be in the forward facing position for children between 20 and 40 pounds and over 1 year of age.

* When using the seat in a forward-facing position, always use the highest of the three sets of slots provided with this seat for the harness.

* If using this seat in a rear-facing position, the harness should come out of the center or lowest slots.

* The harness should fit snugly with room for no more than one finger between the harness and your childs collarbone.

* Forward-facing safety seats for toddlers reduce the fatality risk by 54 percent.

Booster Seats

* Use forward facing only.

* High-back booster with built-in harness: for children between 30 and 40 pounds. Harness should be replaced by adult lap and shoulder belt when child reaches 40 pounds.

* Belt positioning booster seats: for children between 40 and 80 pounds and up to four feet nine inches. Never use with only the lap belt -- use with shoulder and adult lap belt together. Shoulder belt should cross chest, never over stomach. Make sure belt fastens without extra slack.

Another common mistake parents can make is not properly securing the seat itself in their vehicle. It is estimated that 8 out of 10 seats on American roads are improperly installed. Seat Check, a national organization that works with Toys R Us, the NHTSA, and several other sponsors holds regular free inspection clinics that can give parents piece of mind.

To find a child seat inspection station in your area, log onto www.seatcheck.org, or call (866) SEATCHECK. You can find car seat installation and other child safety advice on the Farmers Insurance Web site: www.farmers.com.

TwoYear Olds: The Original Freedom Fighters

We call him the Buddha Napoleon. Anyone who's ever lived with a two year old knows exactly what I'm talking about. He's this amazing blend of cosmic beauty, love, and peace while simultaneously making it crystal clear that he's the grand dictator of the known universe. His little size never deters him from anything he sets his mind to. I'd forgotten so much since raising my first two children. The ten and twelve year age difference allows for that. Lucky for the Buddha Napoleon, I've had practice and am therefore a lot more knowledgeable and patient this time around.

I believe this is probably the most important year for his social development. During the first year of a baby's life, we're supposed to set a solid foundation of love and trust. That first year puts in place a basic belief that the world is a wonderful place full of love and light, or it's not. The second year, we teach them to believe in themselves. Get up and walk, learn to speak, learn to manipulate toys, learn that ever important can-do attitude. After the second birthday, it's all about personal power and boundaries. How do we get what we want from others? How do we stay out of trouble? Why do all of these stupid rules exist anyway? Do I have a right to tell you No since you say it to me all of the time? What are the consequences if I give in all of the time? And if I don't give in, then what? Am I in charge of my life or are you? I think it's a miniature version of the same dynamics we go through with our teenagers. They're just revisiting these same questions from a taller and more hormonal perspective. Handle the two year old stage well, and I think you'll find the teenage years aren't nearly so difficult.

Remember back to when you were thirteen... did your folks answer your questions with, Because I said so or did they actually give you real reasons for their decisions? Which had a bigger impact on your ability to honor and respect their view point? It's no different with two year olds. Find the vocabulary that they understand and explain to them why they can't scream at the top of their lungs just to hear the echo throughout the grocery store. It hurts my ears. It hurts everyone in the stores ears, and that's not okay. Explain why they can't kick and pound on you while you are buckling them into the car seat. That hurts me, and I don't like it. Quite often they'll quit. You'll still have days when they'll do it anyway, but they'll completely understand why they're getting busted. They'll know that it's because they made a choice not because you're just being mean for the heck of it. Over and over, you have to keep telling them why. They also need to see you enforce the rules on others too. Role model for them that everyone in the house is being held by the same standards of behavior. Conduct yourself accordingly. Eventually, they'll come to agree with the rules if they understand the reasoning behind them. Because I said so isn't a reason that any self-respecting two year old will ever embrace.

Self-respect is a very important aspect that I think too many parents downplay in raising their children. How is someone supposed to come away with any kind of self-respect if they've been raised to never ever disagree or question authority? My favorite is when I hear people say, Don't say no to me, I'm your mother! The fact that people are capable of breeding doesn't make them right! If you want your child to respect you and to speak to you with respect, then earn it. Children are very observant. Do you practice what you preach? Do you scream and yell at them and then bust them for doing the same thing back to you? They mimic your behaviors because you represent what it is to be a grown up in society. Do you spank first and ask questions second? Then they will too. Do you want a child who grows up to be a follower or a leader? If you punish them every time they try to take the lead, then they will either avoid leadership, or they will punish anyone who gets in their way.

Give your child the right to say No. Tell your two year old it's okay to say No, I don't want Uncle Johnny to pick me up and tickle me right now. Then, make Uncle Johnny respect your toddler's personal space. Later, when the child is in someone else's space, you can remind them of how it feels as you explain why they need to back off.

The key to this is to teach your child about presentation and about listening skills. It's okay to disagree with me, but you can't scream and yell and kick. It's okay to tell me no, but you also have to listen to my side of the argument too. You then have to role model what it is you want from them. You have to listen to their reasons and then they have to listen to yours. Teach them negotiation skills. Teach them how to say no so that it's not offensive. Sure it's a lot easier to just deny them the right to disagree, but it'll come back on you when they're teenagers. Almost everyone disagreed with me when I gave my older two kids permission to question authority and to openly argue their point. I just made sure they were polite and respectful while doing so. Their teachers and babysitters weren't always thrilled, but communications were always open and honest and understandings were always reached. My older two have a solid belief in setting personal boundaries and not allowing others to take advantage. And so does the Buddha Napoleon.
